The Ortofon 2M is even made to fit flush into the Rega arms, their competitor. If they make a cartridge that doesn't fit in 99% of arms you will soon be out of business. Most cartridges you can buy are made to fit in what is in the market. Not to mention using a different or no record mat. When you play a flimsy single you also change the VTA compared to a 200g lp. When you change the vertical tracking force you also change the verticle tracking angle because you push in the suspension. The more refined (or expensive) your turntable is, the closer the tolerances and the more care has to be taken in setup and alignment. You can play records with a postcard and a sowing needle. It almost sounds like a low bit rate mp3 file in comparison. when doing comparisons to digital material the jvc holds up much better, the high frequencies sound like they're there. Anyways, I got a debut carbon DC to plug straight into the phono stage of my Onkyo A-9010 with hopes of having at least a decent upgrade in sound quality, but I immediately notice upon doing A/B comparisons that the debut carbon is less "transparent" sounding than the cheap jvc and shure combo. I'd tell you the models but I'm not home right now. The jvc can be found on ebay for less than 50 and the cart I think is about 40-50.
